The First World War resulted in an unprecedented range of encounters between peoples from different ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds. Soldiers from across the globe travelled to different theatres of war where they not only encountered fellow-soldiers and non-combatants with different languages, religions or customs, but also interacted with friendly or belligerent civilians. This interdisciplinary conference seeks to investigate the different kinds of encounters, exchanges and entanglements happening during wartime.

In Different Skies: Music and Writing of the First World War

Venue: Chapel at King’s College London

An evening of readings, songs and music. This concert is a prelude to the two-day conference Cultural Encounters during Global War, 1914-1918: Traces, Spaces, Legacies.

Out of the wreckage of the First World War emerged some of the most haunting testimonies, literature and music of the twentieth century. In Different Skies takes us through the tumult of the times with an evening of writings, songs and music from men and women, combatants and non-combatants, civilians and pacifists, from belligerent, colonial and neutral countries in order to understand the international nature as well as the various hidden histories of the conflict.

The evening will feature performances by the tenor James Gilchrist and readings by the West End actor Matthew Cammelle and BBC presenter Reeta Chakrabarti. Jâms Coleman will be on the piano and the Punjabi folksongs will be performed by Jasdeep Singh and his team. The readings have been chosen by Santanu Das and the songs and music by Kate Kennedy.
